Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

To put it simply, I am a white, teenage, American girl from just outside Chicago, living in Wisconsin, and attending UW-Madison. There is no getting around the color of my skin being a major aspect of the opportunities life has given not just me, but the entirety of my family—who have all been white. I consider my background European, although I have never looked deep within my ancestry past the point of knowing I am at least one-quarter Danish and partly Irish. My being white, Caucasian, whatever one wants to call it, has placed me within the circle of the “majority” of American society. Prior to classes that require me to contemplate questions of race and ethnicity, which began in an English class in high school, I have never needed to develop…

Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, authors during the Harlem Renaissance, used their poetry and short stories to challenge ideas about race and the division it caused in America. The narrators in Hughes’ “Theme for English B” and Hurston’s “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” are both in the process of exploring their racial identities, yet while the narrator in Hurston’s story embraces her differences, the speaker in Hughes’ poem is more focused on questioning the aspects that cause him and his white classmates to differ. Nonetheless, Hughes and Hurston both use a common theme of racial identity as well as symbolism and the use of metaphor, to explain the struggle of being African-American in the 20th century. In Hughes’ poem “Theme for…

Roger became a better person because of the theme that trust can make you a better person. Mrs.Jones took Roger to her house, which shows that she trusts him because a person usually doesn't bring someone to their house unless they trust them. Mrs.Jones also, “left the door open,” and left the pocketbook in the room unattended with Roger. We can say that this allowed him to become a better person because instead of stealing it like he did in the beginning of the story, “ The boy took care to sit on the far side of the room, away from the purse.” Therefore, the theme that a person can turn better through trust has changed Roger for the…

When facing adversity people either have positive or negative feeling about the outcome. They are either optimistic or pessimistic.
