In “Thank You Ma’m”, Langston Hughes portrays Mrs. Jones as a loving and caring person who teaches a misguided boy a meaningful and important lesson. Roger, a young lad, runs up on Mrs. Jones in an attempt to steal her purse. The strap of the purse breaks, Roger down, so Mrs. Jones decided to take Roger back to her place instead of calling the authorities. Pete’s girlfriend, Maybelle, recently broke it off with him causing emotional turmoil for him. This sets him off the edge and he then takes it out on the innocent Sucker. Pete looks back on the vent, stating “There was something in me [Pete] and I couldn’t help myself. I don’t think anybody ever gets that mad but once,” (10). Pete then goes back to bed after the altercation and he recalls “Sucker was gone when I woke up the next day. And later when I wanted to apologize as I had planned he looked at me in this new hard way so that I couldn’t say a word, (12). Peter verbally put down his brother. He verbally assaults him which clearly shows his lack of empathy. For Sucker, this is a life-changing event.
