Stealing is something that is punishable in jail for three or more years. It is taken very seriously and is something that can ruin your life. “Thank you M’am” by Langston Hughes, is a short story of a boy named Roger who tries to steal the purse of a lady named Ms. Jones’. Roger is very poor and has no parents or a home. Ms. Jones’ brings him into her home and lets him eat and wash his face, she later gives him money to buy the blue suede shoes that he wants. In the short story “Thank you M’am” by Langston Hughes, Hughes illustrates the poverty due to Ms. Jones’ purse almost being stolen. This is because Rodger doesn’t have parents, Ms. Jones’ house is small and Roger hasn’t eaten.

“Not with that face, I would not take you nowhere,” said the woman. “Here I am trying to get home to cook me a bite to eat and you snatch my pocketbook! Maybe, you ain’t been to your supper either, late as it be. Have you?” Ms. Jones’ can tell that Roger doesn’t have enough money to eat and hasn’t eaten in a long time so, she offers him to supper. “Eat some more, son,” she said.She knows that he probably won’t be able to eat once he leaves her house. So he must eat while he can. When she got to her door, she dragged Rodger inside, down a hall, and into a large kitchenette-furnished room at the rear of the house.She switched on the light and left the door open. Rodger could hear other roomers laughing and talking in the large house. Ms. Jones’ has a kitchenette ( a smaller kitchen ) meaning that she doesn’t have the money to afford a house with a big kitchen. She also shares the house with other people to make rent less. Then she cut him a half of her ten-cent cake. Ten cents is really cheap, this shows that Ms. Jones’ doesn’t have very much money to afford
