“Thank You M’am”, a short story, by Langston Hughes, is about a woman that teaches a poor street boy a lesson about stealing. The story starts of with a street boy, named Roger, trying to steal a woman named Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones’s purse. Instead of getting away with it, Mrs. Jones takes Roger home because she used to be like Roger and she wanted to help him since someone helped her.

When Roger tells Mrs. Jones his reason for trying to steal from Mrs. Jones was because he wanted blue suede shoes, in line 93, Mrs. Jones admits, “ ‘I were young once and I wanted things I could not get.’ ” She hints at the fact that she used to be like Roger. This goes back to the the claim that no one helped her so she wanted to help Roger. It
