Thank you for the scholarship. I am Mandy Schreiner and I go to JL Mann High School. I’m in 10th grade and take all honors and one AP class. I play flute in the school band and outside of school in marching band, I take Spanish 4 Honors. My favorite class is band and my least favorite is Engineering. I like to listen to music and hang out with friends in my free time I like to cook when I can and practice cello and flute. I also enjoy playing cymbals in winter percussion. I don’t like doing homework or studying, but I’m required to do homework. I want to become a doctor or an engineer in the future, but continue playing my instruments.

Last year I used the money for many things. I was able to buy my cello which allowed me to continue to

I want to continue maintaining my cello and flute and keep having lessons, so that I can improve. Maybe I could even purchase a step up instrument so that I’m not playing on a student instrument anymore. I want to play in the Clinic Region Band and also All State Band, which is the best players in the state. I also want to participate in cross country again. I want to attend GSSM this coming year, but I don’t know if I will make it. If I am accepted there is an Interim in January which is a fun class that gives the students a break. However, those classes cost money for the most part and are not included in the yearly meal/living plan. I also want to go to Furman, but I don’t know on what instrument. I also want to go to a Spanish immersion camp. Next year I plan to take AP Spanish, but I need to improve my speaking skills. An immersion camp would help with that, I could meet all kinds of new people, and I would become more independent. I also want to use the money so that I can do marching band again. It was a ton of fun and I made amazing friends. That group became my family and I’ll never be able to look at a football field again without remembering all the happy memories I’ve made there. An activity similar to marching band is winter percussion. This year is the second year of its existence and I’m playing cymbals. It’s very exciting because I can march and I can spend time with all the other kids who are marching. Also …show more content…
Short-term I want to be able to maintain my GPA and end the year with high As. I also want to be able to take the AP exam for AP World History and receive a 5 on it. I am also aiming to learn piccolo for concert and marching season I also want to be accepted into GSSM a public boarding school for intelligent STEM students. It’s more difficult than normal high school and has a rigorous application process. Long-term I want to either go to college and work on an engineering degree in biomedical engineering with an emphasis on nanotechnology or go to medical school and become a doctor. For colleges I would want to go to Case Western Reserve University, Clemson University, or Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Some things I want to do in the next couple years are to go on the Spanish trip to Costa Rica because I could practice my Spanish with native speakers. During one summer I want to travel out of the country and practice my Spanish speaking skills. Also it would make me more independent and more knowledgeable of other cultures. I have many goals and know that not all of them will come true, but the money could help make some of them come

I was finally free. I had more free time, less stress, and had lost the feeling of sweat dripping down my back. Quitting marching band was one of the best decisions I had ever made, and even though I was happy to be free, I had reservations about quitting. In my mind, band was where I would find people I identified with, but in reality, I didn’t find anyone who shared my interests. I longed to find a group that I fit in with.…

I would like to participate in the BOLD summer camp because in my biology class this school year my class and I learned about cancer cells, and I want to learn more about cancer because I find the subject of cancer very fascinating. It is very interesting how a simple mutation during cell division can cause a rogue cell with its own agenda. It seems like something from a movie. I was fascinated at how a cancer cell is essentially immortal because it ignores signals for cell death, and proceeds to live on.…
