This concluding assigned reading has been similar to the last three, in that although the subject of what Goleman I writing about can be very interesting much of what has the capability of holding my interest gets lost in the at times overly clinical text. Much of the book has covered the subject of empathy in child development and it’s role in how successful that child might be in it’ academic future. In the family crucible Goleman discusses what a child must have in order to determine it’s preparedness from school and the list of trait for a child to possess before starting school is much more demanding than I would have imagined. It cause me…

Perhaps the single, most common answer to the question of the purpose of school is that it is to shape young minds in preparing them for the future. For some, school is where they go learn skills and techniques useful in the work world. For others, they are just forced to go to school, to be hassled with the burdens of overwhelming assignments, which deprive them of their ever so fulfilling social lives and other salient priorities. However, for the students in Crenshaw High School, school was a sanctuary, a safe haven; the only place where they felt accepted, worthy and optimistic. School was their only outlet where they could openly express themselves, especially in their English classes.…

In the movie I, Robot we are introduced to a long debated philosophical question: “What makes a human being human?”. Is the essence of mankind the fact that we are biologically unique among the myriad of different species on this planet? Is it the fact that we seem to have transcended our baser needs in order to try and make the world fit us as opposed to us fitting into the world around us? Is it perhaps that we have what people would call a “soul”? Or is it possibly that we were said to have either evolved from our animal counterparts, the primates, in order to be what we consider better?…
