Thabo Sefolosha Research Paper

It was a warm spring night in April 2015 when Thabo Sefolosha life was changed forever. After helping the Atlanta Hawks defeat the Knicks. Sefolosha, and his former teammate Pero Antic, had a run in with the NYPD outside of celebrity heavy 1Oak night club in New York City. The police were investigating an incident involving their fellow NBA player Chris Copeland who was stabbed outside the night club in a separate incident. That night Sefolosha found out what many young African Americans have known for years. It doesn’t take much for the NYPD and other law enforcement agencies to target us. Sometimes you don’t have to do anything at all. For Sefolosha he was just another disturbing statistic in the ever growing cases of police brutality against …show more content…
If Sefolosha would've been there he would’ve been a big factor for the Hawks defensively, He isn’t a marquee player mentioned in the same breath as Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, and James but he’s a glue guy which is equally as important as the player that goes out and get you 30 points every night.

There're usually three sides to stories like this, this police, the victim, and somewhere in between the truth.

I recently sat down with Sefolosha, and we spoke about several things. His lawsuit against the NYPD, police brutality, racism, and the 2016 Presidential election.

It has been over a year since the unfortunate incident at 1oak took place. Even though you were cleared of all charges by the department there is still a lawsuit between yourself and the NYPD. Without getting yourself in trouble can you provide any updates on the lawsuit between yourself and the NYPD?

I don’t have any new updates, its going to take time for it to be resolved.

Can you just take me back to that night, and tell me what happened?

It's well documented what happened. I came out of the 1Oak club, I’m not sure what the term is but I got picked out by the police, they were very disrespectful, in the end they forcefully arrested me for no reason, and broke my

If you let them get away with a slap on the wrist they’re going to keep doing it.It's troubling to me.

The 2016 Preisdental election was one of the most controversial elections in recent memory because of the racist, and sexist, remarks from President Elect Donald Trump, and all the controversy that surrounded Hillary Clinton. What are your thoughts about the election?

I have many thoughts about it, the American people have spoken in a way for me coming from Switzerland it's hard to understand the electoral college, it's something that should probably be reviewed. I thought it was a tough choice the American people had to make, it was on TV, the ads from both sides were very negative. It's tough that so much negativity around the elections. It should be a time where you’re happy and excited about the incoming leader.

This election really showed a huge divide between citizens in America. Did you support either

“Black Lives Matter” Movement & Police Brutality As much as the subjects of “Black Lives Matter” and police brutality are getting stale and cliché, unfortunately it is still an issue that will not be corrected by hushed complaints and sweeping under the rug. However, this problem is not brand new; it has only escalated. Racial discrimination began in the times of slavery and has been an issue since—well forever. The discrimination has been toughest on minorities—like the African-American community. Along with the racial discrimination from society itself, some police and law enforcement figures have often abused their power and taken advantage of their place in the majority race.…

In, “Nobody Mean More to Me than You and the Future of Willie Jordan,” June Jordan examines the usage of language by blacks in America as well as its acceptance as a standard language. She uses Black English as a model to speak on the greater issue of the rejection of blacks in America by whites. If Standard or “White” English is the only standard language in America, then blacks are not considered or viewed as equals in America. Jordan believed that her students understood that the language that they chose to identify and speak on a daily basis was not considered the appropriate language in America but she wished to guide her students to the realization of what that entailed. She helped them re-learn the language they grew up with, pointing out the differences it has with Standard English along the way.…

The synonymy of Blackness with criminality is not a new phenomenon in America. A content analysis of the data revealed the murders of unarmed blacks to be a support of White Supremacy, and advance the racist legacy of citizen slave patrols that were initiated during slavery. Consequently, assumes that blacks are dangerous, sub-human, and inherently criminal, and results in little personal accountability for black murder among members of law enforcement. Shaun Gabiddon in Criminological Theories on Race and Crime discussed the concept of "Negrophobia" which was more extensively examined by Armour (1997). Negrophobia can be surmised as an irrational of Blacks, which includes a fear of being victimized by Black, that can result in Whites shooting…

These situations were all against young black males that had absolutely no reason to be murdered as a means to a solution. As these three situations only stand as representations of the many black male to be victimized by the police system in America it also shows us that although we have made strides in race relations and equality we still have a very long and tiring journey to go to be fully accepted by our fellow counterpart. Laquan McDonald was shot 16 times by a Chicago…

Police brutality and racism seem to be consistently connected to one another. This has become a serious issue in which circumstances have ended violently or even fatally when involving police officers and African American citizens. In 2014, the United States Census Bureau reported that African American people make up only 13.2% of our population. Anyone can become a victim of police brutality, regardless of their race; but statistics show that African American people are being killed by police at more than twice the rate of Caucasian and Hispanic people. It is also considerably more likely for the African American victims in these situations to have been unarmed at their time of death.…
