Th The Expectancy Violations Theory: A Psychological Analysis

Communication theories help create an understanding of different perspectives happening in particular events. I recently went through a critical incident that made me realize the differences in photography norms and how tension can create contradictions in my relationships. During October of last year, my sister-in-law contacted me to take photos for her family, including my oldest brother and their newborn. The photos were special because they only had a few of them together from a tripod, but were not professionally done by another photographer. We arranged on a date and time, aimed for the morning, in the backyard of my parents’ house. Once they arrived, I felt rushed when they told me they could only be there for an hour. My goal was to give long-lasting photos that did not seem forced, but as analyzed in the following theories, I was unable to undertake the unintentional pressure and tensions that arrived. …show more content…
Since my brother David and I are sixteen years apart, our age barrier created unfamiliarity throughout our relationship over time. I thought that providing photos of his family would further grow our relationship. Instead, our overall knowledge of photography collided. I am the most familiar with natural lighting photography; however, David uses external lighting. He thought my technique was obscure to his norms and stopped the session, after only a few photos taken my way, to get his personal external flash.
