Textual Analysis Of The Dares

Nerve is a movie that asks the audience to think about how social media influences our decision making. I wanted to review it because of the message that is presented to the audience and the question that is asked by the makers. Are the choices that we make individual or collective choices online? If you succeed than you get paid and if you fail or snitch you will lose money. The ethos of the film is that the users and the watchers are always online. The camera establishes the image and ethos heavily by having the audience seem as if they are in the computer or mobile device witnessing the choices of the actors. The two end up surpassing all other users by their viewership. The dares went from a simple kiss worth $100 to trying on a Couture dress for $500 to riding blindfolded for $10,000. This film explores the aspect that participants and watchers are both equal enablers for the morality of the game. The players want to make money and the watchers are almost voyeurs in that they receive some satisfaction of watching the players hopefully failing. The selling point of the movie is that social media users and Western civilization can relate to this mob rule style story. This is essentially Rome and the coliseum in the new millennium. The immediate thing that I noticed about this film was the texts and graphics. The neon lights everywhere are representing of new messages on our iPhones and there are text and user names spread throughout the movie. The visual argument appeals to the emotions of Nerve. Users say whatever they want in the comment section without consequences. This movie is intended for millennials to remind them that there are laws and rules.
