Textual Analysis Of Paris

Improved Essays
“Paris” is a single that was released for digital download worldwide on January 13, 2017. It was written and produced by The Chainsmokers, and has been #1 on US’ Hot Dance/Electronic Songs (Billboard) and #5 on US Mainstream Top 40 (Billboard). I have chosen to specifically study the music video of this piece, which was released on February 16, 2017. The lyrics to this song and the characters of the music video imply a relationship between two individuals who are presumably lovers. In the piece, the male in this relationship sings to the female who is struggling to uphold certain responsibilities. The man refuses to let this woman in the relationship be brought down by the difficulties of this world, assuring her through statements like, “If …show more content…
Looking generically, this song has the typical dance, synthesized sound which makes it seem like every other song and sound that is so popular in pop and dance right now. Because of this, lyrics about a couple in a nice city named Paris wouldn’t feel out of the ordinary for any member of the public, in fact it might seem a little too generic. I think the Chainsmokers intended for their audience members to interpret this mass media text in the simple way it originally is portrayed, to even further prove the point to other generations that there is more to millennials than what would “generically” meet the eye. I think Chainsmokers wanted to hide this meaning within their piece to prove that they’re more than just the typical dance sound; that their songs have purpose and are relatable for a large portion of millennials. Of course, because Chainsmokers’ songs are aimed towards the millennial age, there will be obvious differences in interpretations from other age groups. Older adults may see this song as disrespectful to the parents the couple in this song are running from, and even others could see the members of this song as just completely wasting their lives as they head to places like Paris to escape their responsibilities. Because millennials make up many of the listeners for songs by popular pop bands presently, the intention of Chainsmokers within this song is fascinating, and makes the band so much more likeable, relatable, and human than popular celebrities of music groups often seem. Through this song Chainsmokers are striving to show millennials that they must live life with a knowledge of the world’s pressures, but still maintain a knowledge that there is no need to conform to intimidating social influences that weaken the individuality of our world’s young people. Satire is an important element in writing. It’s a way for writers to take a step back and comment on something; to show how ridiculous it is without just flat out saying it. Satire is usually used as a fun way of pointing out the faults in society and current events. The Other Paris by Mavis Gallant was written in 1956, barely a decade after World War 2 finished, the world was rebuilding and marriage was seen as a safe option, a way to move forward and start a life together. The main character of The Other Paris, Carol thinks of marriage as a security blanket rather than a lifelong commitment to the one you love, she accepts a proposal from a man named Howard, a man she hadn’t even known for three weeks…simply because she assumes that nobody…

Much like Callaghan struggled to redeem control from under Parisian and Hemingway’s influences, John Glassco in Memoirs of Montparnasse endeavored to find and regain power over his narrative. Memoirs of Montparnasse was a delicate attempt to define himself and proclaim his Canadian identity amongst the modernist project in Canada. In Memoirs of Montparnasse, Glassco offers his readers an unconventional history of modernism with other opportunities in the ongoing battle to establish the ground for Canadian identity. Therefore, Memoirs of Montparnasse are a unique construction that takes important place in the Canadian literary tradition with its affiliations to gender, sexuality, and nationality in Canadian writing. Glassco’s memoir of youth belong to Montreal as much as Paris.…

Paris is Burning and Jim in Bold, two films centering around homosexuality, highlight the challenges gay individuals faced in two different time periods of the 1980s to the mid 2000s. Paris is Burning, filmed in Harlem, New York City during the late 1980s, shows how homosexuality remained atypical in everyday society. This film highlights the drag balls that these individuals attended, showing that those events acted as an escape from the cruelty of their community. Twenty years later, Jim in Bold aired for the first time. This film tracks the cross-country tour of a group of gay youth, as they shared the spirit of Jim Wheeler with the rest of young, gay America.…

The secret complexity of a leaf reflects my understanding of reading this year. When observed from the outside, it is nothing more than something that is green and bendy. However, the interior of a leaf conducts many incredible processes despite its size. Similarly, a sample of text may seem very simple until you analyze it deeper. Throughout the school year, I was exposed to several different texts with different themes, and each of these texts had very different meanings.…

Within The Other Paris, Canadian writer Mavis Gallant’s satirical portrayal of modern society progressively reveals humanity’s current reliance on procedural thought to accomplish all tasks. Identifying both Carol and Howard Mitchell as severely misguided characters through her blind trust in college courses and his desperate attempt to live according to society’s expectations, the passage illustrates the cold logic that begins to encroach on the community’s mind, eliminating the basic nature which makes humans humane. Utilizing a mocking narrative voice and ironic characterization, Gallant illustrates society’s departure from humanity while also constructing a social commentary urging the community to escape from the unfeeling reason that…

It is definitely important to remember Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ histories because it helps us understand the hardships they faced as a culture and it can further help us recognise how we can close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people share four main world views; culture, land, place and country and relationships. The world view, relationships, is conveyed many times in each of the literary texts by relating back to certain events that Aboriginal elders faced. Three texts that clearly represent the world view relationships are,; Change the Game, by the Colli Crew; Treaty, by Yothu Yindi and Took the Children Away, by Archie Roach. The Colli Crew’s song, Change the Game, is about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people- mostly describing the people of the past; in the text, it states that they are singing from north Queensland near the border.…

Cowritten by Childish Gambino and Ludwig Göransson in 2012 for Childish Gambino’s album Camp, “Heartbeat” narrates a dysfunctional relationship that cannot be salvaged despite the poetic voice’s desire to do so. [con’t] “Heartbeat” is visibly a song full of confusion, which the narrative voice decides to pass on to the reader as well. Instead of offering full insight for the reader, the reader is forced to follow along with the confusion and stress being felt by the poetic voice. With lyrics such as “I wanted you to know” (Childish Gambino 1) and “I read his posts on your wall and I feel sick” (Childish Gambino 61), the usage of the words “you” and “your” makes the reader infer that the song’s audience is meant to be the female subject. With this…

The song portrays a range of social problems the people have to grapple with as day go by. The song speaks to the inner city streets of the American society regarding the social injustices leveled against the minority communities especially the African Americans. The white man controls most of the majority hence perpetuating racial segregation right from the media, the prisons to the social environments. This has made people to choose a life of drug dealing and easy money as well as abusing the welfare system because they have no other alternative in a society that does not provide them with a motivation to change.…

“The Fall of a City” Literary Analysis “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation” - Oscar Wilde. This sad but true reality, especially for people who grew up in the 1950’s, is accurately depicted in the short story, “The Fall of a City” by Alden Nowlan. In this story, 11-year-old Teddy is being raised by his inexperience and oppressive aunt and uncle. Since Teddy is typically alone at home, he builds a fantasy city called Upalia made of paperdolls to keep him company.…
