She believed that a man and a woman had to be married for the relationship to be called a family. But after reading the chapter, I not only agree with the textbook definition of family, but I feel that my family fits the mold of the textbook definition very well. The textbook definite a family as, “…an intimate group of two or more people who (1) live together in a committed relationship, (2) care for one another and any children, and (3) share activities and close emotional ties” (Benokraitis, 2015, p. 3) Our family constantly supports one another in everything that we do. Our textbook talks a lot about the functions of the family and the purpose that they have. One of the big functions it speaks of is the idea of emotional support. My family, especially over the course of the past year, has been a tremendous resource for me as acting as my primary group.
