The “what if”, factor is the key to peaking interests of potential spectators and getting the most out of the genre. What if you could enter someone’s dreams and steal their secrets? What if there were giant robots from another planet that came to earth and can transform into super cars, semi-trucks, and tanks? All are generally very easy ideas for a composer to catch an audience’s attention with, simply because of natural human attraction of the unknown. Of course, its fictional right now, but who knows? In 1850, if you were to tell someone you use a device daily that’s seven inches tall and four inches wide, capable of contacting any person on the face of the earth with the touch of a button, they would have called you insane. In reality you might have been put in a mental hospital depending on how serious you are about it. As a result, this is why sci-fi takes hold of the attention of so many of us, the future possibilities are endless. Mystery on the other hand, is all about the suspense, what is going to happen next. It is a genre all about solving questions given to the audience in the beginning, hooking them until it can be answered once given all the pieces.
