Textual Analysis Of A Popular Meme

Improved Essays
The funniest internet trends and memes create a community in the comments where the audience can come together to talk about how the posts made them feel. The comment section is a social space where the readers can meet people with similar tastes in humor to them, as well as learn about how a meme can be interpreted by others. For example, in the past week a video surfaced of a young boy yodeling in the isles of a Walmart Supermarket. This video was received with much love and affection. People in the comments reflected on how this little boy made their days as well as made them laugh. After a while this video became so popular that it was changed into a meme. People began making remixes of his song and filming themselves going out into a …show more content…
These posts will become popular when a person, or community such as Black Twitter, voices their opinion on how this post is damaging to the feelings of the ones it is about. For example, a popular meme a couple of weeks ago was taking two things and comparing them to the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket from the popular kids show Spongebob Squarepants. The Krusty Krab was meant to symbolize the best of the best and the Chum Bucket symbolized the worst of the worst. People would compare their favorite musicians, sports teams, or television shows, and those were well received and loved. However, once people ran out of innocent things to compare, it started to get ugly. Many posts surfaced of people comparing religions, races, and beliefs against one another. This naturally created a large dispute amongst the audience, since many people were feeling attacked by the post. The comments and replies were all of people fighting over which religion was best, or which race. Posts like these have a tougher lesson to be learned than the funny ones, but one is still present. The conflicting ideas in the comments may be tough for people to swallow, but they are teaching each other cultural acceptance and how to be respectful of people who are different by sharing personal experiences and history. These posts are a great example of a contact zone, because there are strong conflicting ideas coming together, and with that comes a large number of people learning about different

In Teaching Trayvon, Noble argues about the positive and negative, but mostly negative effects that the mass media’s coverage of Trayvon Martin’s murder garnered. More specifically, Noble provides examples for how the lack of empathy influenced the proliferation of certain narratives in the media in cases of police brutality. One of the biggest examples of this was the “meme-ification” of Trayvon’s death that was not only incredibly crass, but also reflective of past commodification of Black trauma like minstrel shows. Also, Noble argues that this meme-ification being allowed under the guise of free speech and intellectual property is indicative of the strength this dominant narrative can take hold when political, economic, and social, institutions…

Memes have been created as interesting form of cultural expression. They can appear to be very stupid, and a lot of them are, but they have the ability to make a commentary about what is going on in society whether it’s direct or in direct. Memes are like tiny satires, ridiculing the actions and words of some people in order to make some sort of point or even more often a joke. There are memes about athletes and sports, celebrities, and actions of a more general population (i.e. white girls, Republicans, etc.). The idea is that a phrase or an image is used in conjunction with either an image or phrase that is meant to make fun of the subject.…

Blackmores theories help support Gladwell's idea to an extent, but also goes against it because of her ideas on memes and imitation. Having an altered perception of the world, Ken Kesey created the captivating novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. In his novel Kesey has constructed a world within a psychiatric ward, which becomes a microcosm of society. In this world the assumed deaf and dumb Chief Bromden, and other timid patients are heavily controlled by Nurse Ratched, an authority apart of the powerful and dehumanising combine. Through figurative language, foreshadowing and motifs readers are warned about the influence of societal expectations can have, particularly on a person’s power, sexuality and individuality, and thus Kesey ultimately leads us to question what it means to be human and an accepted member of society. Through the unreliable and delusional narration of Chief, who believes his experience on the ward was ‘the truth even if it didn’t happen’, Kesey allows us to see how societal expectations may affect a person’s…
