Texting While Driving

In the twenty-first century, cell phones play an important role in the lives of all people. Across countries and across cultures, people stay connected through social media and the internet. Men, women, and children tie their lives to their cell phones, and they become easily distracted by the pictures and sounds emanating from the tiny screen. When driving, the small distractions cell phones present can add up to devastating consequences. All states should pass laws designating cell phone use while driving as an illegal action. These laws would eliminate distractions for drivers, take financial aspects into consideration, and provide an effective example for the youth of generations to come, thus contributing to a safer society. For example, global positioning system (GPS) devices on phones connect with satellites in order to provide a driver with directions. These devices quickly present drivers with a list of routes, and the driver can select the fastest route to any given place. However, the benefits of outlawing cell phone use while driving outweigh the costs. Using a cell phone to obtain directions can still be distracting; thus, it is safer to use paper maps or enlist the help of other passengers in the car. Utilizing other passengers is safer than constantly checking to make sure one is traveling on the correct path. Perhaps the most important reason to pass this law is to set a good example for the young passengers in the car. Children observe and often adopt many of the behaviors of their parents. Thus, parents must make the conscious choice to stress interpersonal contact as opposed to screen time. They must put down the cell phone and concentrate on driving above all else. By passing a law to ban cell phone use while driving, states will aid parents in raising their children to become safe drivers as adults. Parents will begin to increasingly place their family over their cell phone while in the car, which teaches children important lessons. In a society where technology is always prevalent, parents will defy social norms in order to promote the well-being of their children. Mothers and fathers will highlight the importance of distancing oneself from distractions while driving. These lessons can translate to other aspects of life as well, for a decreased dependency on cell phones will promote more face-to-face conversations. In turn, children may become more socially and cognitively developed. Therefore, the laws will encourage parents to educate young children about the dangers of cell phones use while driving, which will leave
