This is extremely dangerous, because, unlike being intoxicated where you can still somewhat see the road, you are not looking at the road at all. Driving at a speed of fifty-five miles per hour, if a person were to look at their phone for five seconds, which is the equivalent of driving the entire length of a football field without looking at the road. Teenagers are the people with the most accidents due to texting and driving. Teenagers who text and drive, spend approximately ten percent of their driving time, outside of their lane. This cause has been around for longer than texting and driving, but is just as lethal. The most common misconception that leads to the idea of getting into the car is smart, is people think that they are okay to drive. Alcohol has more of an effect on the body than most people realize, if they did, they might think twice about getting into the car after a few drinks. Alcohol affects a person’s vision, multitasking ability, judgement, reaction time, and coordination. (Road Crash Statistics 2) All of these things are extremely important and necessary, when operating a vehicle. The more a person has consumed the worse the short term effects become. These facts are a multitude of reasons not to get behind the wheel when you have been drinking or are planning on drinking in the car itself. However, some people still decide to make the wrong decision. An estimated thirty-two percent of fatal car crashes involve an intoxicated driver or pedestrian. Thirteen thousand people each year are killed from drinking and driving, and thousands more are injured.
