Technology has become an obsession among Americans. Over the years, cell phones have gone from a business necessity to a personal necessity. Due to cell phone dependence and the need for somebody to always be accessible, Americans continuously endanger themselves and others by texting and driving. Texting while driving should be avoided at all cost because it takes a driver’s attention off the road, it is dangerous to the public and it can result in life changing consequences. Text messaging while driving has been studied and shown to be detrimental on driving performance. Drivers tend to have reduced reaction to stoplights and obstacles. They have their eyes off the road a good quantity of time and don 't always maintain a straight line on the road. Messaging and driving are especially dangerous for young teen drivers. “Drivers who send and receive text messages take their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. At 55 miles per hour, a texting driver is travelling the length of a football field, including end zones, without looking at the road, according to the transportation department” (Gale Group, cell phones and driving). Driving conditions can be difficult depending on the time of day, without any distractions; however, adding the distraction of a text message can result in a deadly situation.
