A. Technology has advanced plenty in these past few decades. So much so, it has changed the way people communicate. With smart phones becoming so advanced, it is easier to let technology do the writing for them. Texting has changed the way society stays in touch with each other allowing social skills to diminish with time passing by. According to Solomon Ali Daniseh from the International Journal of English Linguistics, the frequent use of mobile phones, specifically among Wa Polytech students, has been very high, approximately 96% of students have use of their cell phones and as a result, it has significantly affected their communication skills. However, texting has not only affected just communication skills. In some way it has also affected grammar and spelling for younger generations. Does this pose a big threat? Not necessarily. The fact that students are accustomed to using their “tech speak” and slang more than proper English doesn’t mean that the world will forever be illiterate because of the technological advancements.
A. Turner (2009) worked with her students to differentiate their writing in the classroom and social media. Some of the students proved that in a way their writing was like “flipping a switch”. Some students were able to do their academic writing with no problem then switch to their everyday language use.

In the end, there is not enough information and research out there to prove that texting is the only thing cooperating to the decline of proper English. While it is not the sole factor for illiteracy, it does contribute to it. Few things could help prevent the day to day mistakes made in academic writing.
