Can texting be right for students? Zach Miners raises this important question in an article he wrote in U.S. News. Miners discovers during his research that some educationalists do not see anything wrong with the idea of texting in school, however others believe it has adverse effects on students’ academic performance. One of the principal and debatably most important concerns related to texting in the classroom involves the level of distraction it may cause. I believe texting in general is good. Before I go on to discuss my position, it is worthy to note as Miners research, according to a market study firm Nielsen, teenagers send over 2800 texts in a month. “Texting has become universal through… generation” (Faulkner & Culwin, 2005). Texting in my opinion could be bad for students based on the following research. According to Dietz, S., & Henrich, C. (2014), who examined whether texting distracts students in a lecture setting established that participants who were in the texting group recorded largely lower marks about 55%, whereas those who did not text recorded high grades around 75%. Instant messaging on a computer, which has correlated qualities to texting, has been shown to be connected with educational distractibility (Levine, Waite, & Bowman, 2007), bigger reports of educational deficiency, and reduced assignment completion (Junco & Cotten, 2010). Scientists have also found that using social technology such as texting or instant messaging during a simulated classroom setting can lead to lower recall (Wood et al., 2012). In addition, GPA and texting while learning are negatively correlated (Windham & B., 2008). Interesting results surrounding cell phone use in the classroom has been related to students’ perception of the interference caused by text messaging. Estimations are varying, but astonishingly, many students acknowledge they find it sidetracking even if they engage in the behavior themselves. Another reason why texting could …show more content…
All the above researchers have concluded from their research that texting during lectures is a distraction not only to the owner of the phone but to other students and instructors. It reduces student-teacher clarity, the perception that one could text and multi-task has been proven to be wrong. My position therefore is to restrict texting in class or during lectures to help build student- teacher clarity and help students improve on their cognitive and attention span in

Her research proposes that texting has minimal effect on student writing (Cullington 367). Speaking for myself, I believe that texting does have an ill correlation with writing because it allows students to be lazier and uses informal language. I am not saying that texting is a bad thing, but there should be a time when abbreviations or informal language needs to stay in the texting realm due to professionalism. As one Minnesota high school student said, “[T]here is a time and a place for everything and formal writing is not the place for communicating the way one would if he or she were texting to his or her friends” (Cullington 368). The “Textspeak”, the slang term the author uses when talking about text messages, is designed to give us a break from calling our friends and family when there is something small we need to tell them –not to carry out our minds in conversations or in our…
