Texting and Driving Distracted driving, also called texting and driving, is when a person driving a car is texting, emailing, talking on the phone or on social media. Texting and driving was not a very big problem before the 2000s because cell phones have only recently become a big thing. Texting became popular around 1997, but only a small number of people owned smartphones. Texting and driving has also only recently become a very deadly problem in the United States due to more people becoming dependant on their phones. In 2011, sixty four percent of Americans owned a smartphone, and ninety percent of those people who own cell phones use them many times throughout their everyday life. A young girl, here in the United States was in a bad car accident caused by texting and driving. Liz Marks, a high school student, was on her phone reading a text from her mom when she lost control of her car. “I ignored the warnings about texting and driving.” she says when she tells her story about the crash. The accident caused her to be blind in one eye, partially deaf, and have no sense of smell. She can also not create tears because her eye ducts were hurt in the accident and she has to take medicine to make her fall asleep every night.
