Thomas Perez, a truck driver for 15 years said, “When drivers take their eyes off the road to text, it’s dangerous for everyone. He said texting ought to be prohibited for all drivers, not just truck and bus drivers” (Cell Phones and Driving). It is important for all drivers to have their number one priority be safe driving. Although all forms of distracted driving have a negative effect on driver concentration, the use of text messaging has the most negative impact. It is most dangerous because the drivers attention is so focused on the screen and the message they might miss sudden changes in the traffic pattern. A new language has developed through the social medium of text messaging. "Because" is "cuz," "are you" is "R U," "laugh out loud" is "LOL," "later" is "l8er" and "got to go" is "G2G." It is possible that text messaging is disintegrating children 's knowledge of proper English. Young people who are constantly text message might get into the habit of using the text lingo in school papers, letters and speech instead of organized, formal writing. Experts worry that these habits will result in generations of sloppy, undisciplined writing. It can also cause problems in emails, when the abbreviations might not be understood. Or the casual language is sent in a formal letter to someone the sender doesn 't know well. The informal lingo is inappropriate, in that case. Also, “Younger drivers were most likely to be distracted by non-driving related activities. Those under 20 years old pose the greatest risk on the road. 60% of all crashes involve those less than 20 years old.” (Gale Group, texting while driving). New and teen drivers are still relatively inexperienced about how to operate the car and rules of road. Texting only draws their attention away from things that might be more automatic for older more experienced drivers. As with all things undistracted practice is necessary. A child learning to ride a bike can’t be successful if they are concentrating on too many things other than pedaling and steering. The
