Japan Textbook Controversy
Japan has been leaving genocides they’ve committed out of their own textbooks, minimizing the number of victims and downright denying some events. Japan is denying some events even happened accusing victims of lying and exaggerating. An example of the sugarcoating of Japanese history is Japan said that the sex slaves known as comfort women were prostitutes and did the things of their own free will.(Wingfield-Hayes). Those forced labour workers even came out and said they were slaves, but Japan accused them of lying. China and Korea have not been happy with all these changes. Japan has many excuses for leaving these parts of history out of Japanese …show more content…
They think this will cause more patriotism among the students of Japan and make them proud to be Japanese. Unfortunately for Japan, there are groups of victims of those atrocities who could prove the textbooks wrong. So, they say that many groups made up and or exaggerated what happened to them during World War 2. One of those groups is the Comfort Women. They were women from Nanjing who after the massacre were forced to become sex slaves. Some tried to escape and were beaten when caught. It’s not ok because teachers are complaining about how their students are learning next to nothing about World War II. An excuse they use is that it will make their students patriots. It wouldn’t be patriotic if someone knew their country is calling the people who suffered greatly liars. It’s like calling Holocaust victims liars and saying that it never happened. It’s immoral and wrong to say that the sex slaves were prostitutes who did sexual acts of their own free will when it was the opposite.
Another thing that Japan does is they try and have the world take pity on them and see them as innocent instead of admitting their mistakes. They claim to be victims when America dropped an atomic bomb on those cities. When in fact they caused America to enter the war by bombing Pearl Harbour and that all those innocent lives in Hiroshima and Nagasaki would still be there if they didn’t drop a bomb on Pearl Harbor. Japan says other countries are making up malicious rumors that are lies to make them look bad. They want people to pity them when they can’t man up and take responsibility for their own actions.
In conclusion, Japan can’t and shouldn’t leave these things out of textbooks. No matter how hard they try they can’t make their crimes disappear and they shouldn’t commit more to make their people think those things never happened. In doing so they have upset other countries. If they did that maybe they
