Textbook Child Observation

One of the best things caretakers can do is to figure out and be aware of their child’s or little friend’s position in terms of development as it will make it much easier to choose appropriate toys, rules and ways of discipline. Comparing a child to a ‘’textbook child’’ or what a child his age is typically expected to be able to do regarding social, emotional, cognitive, language, fine and gross motor skills can be an effective way to place the child in an appropriate level of development for his specific age. Thus, to compare my 3 year old little friend, I have written down observation notes that include almost every activity and skill I have watched him master, achieve often, begin to show, and refuse to try. Yet, I was unable to observe Y. perform most of the gross motor skills written in the textbook so comparing him to the textbook child might be inaccurate. But, I was able to observe Y. jump off the ground with two-footed jumps on May 18th where he was jumping to one of the songs but he still reached out for my hand before attempting to jump to steady himself making this skill an emerging one. However, Y. showed great fine motor skills, as he masters activities requiring fine motor skills like building a tower of nine block efficiently as seen on March 31st where he built a large tower of blocks by himself. Another activity that needs the usage of fine motor skills is completing a puzzle and Y. enjoys and successfully finishes puzzles as seen on many Playschool days like April 8th where he completed a dinosaur puzzle with little assistance from myself. Other than Y.’s abilities in terms of fine motor skills, he is also unable of doing certain things like copying a circle from a drawing as he still doesn’t know how to hold a pencil correctly which makes drawing and writing a difficult task for
