The state of Texas disagrees with his decision to burn the flag out of protest and believes that he should be lawfully punished for this. “Texas' argument that the burning of an American flag ‘is an act having a high likelihood to cause a breach of the peace’.” (pg 16, lines 20-21) On the other hand, Johnson believes he has the right to burn the flag as an act of protest due to the first amendment. The first amendment gives people living in the United States the freedom of speech and expression. Johnson burning the flag was a way of expression therefore, he cannot be founded guilty for that. Texas then brought this case to court, because the state believed that he should be brought to justice. As Texas and Johnson take this to court they give their reasonings as to why they are there. This documentary is a true story over a young man named Jamie Nabozny. Although, there is something different about him, his sexual preference is different than others. Because of this, Jamie was getting harassed by his fellow classmates, and his principals were doing nothing to help him. He was getting punched, kicked, verbally abused, and urinated on. He has gone to the principals many times, yet they do nothing. “It started with words.” (2:11) Jamie said this to show how it got increasingly worse as time went on, and how nobody decided to help him. It got to the point where Jamie almost killed himself due to the situation. Acceptance was hard to grasp in Jamie’s life due to his sexual preferences. Although he had a rough time with most people in his school, there was one teacher who understood him. Her name was, Mrs. Woodworth. She let Jamie eat in her classroom or come to her when he was having trouble. But most of all, she tried to make a difference for him. The other person who showed acceptance for Jamie would be his mother. “If he says he’s gay then we have to deal with it, and start learning some more about it.” (1:28) This is a quote Jamie's mother said about the situation. She was not going to judge him or kick him out of the house, she was going to accept him for who he is and go on with her life.
