Texas Plural Form Of Government

Texas governor’s power is in a 4 way at 39th out of the 50 states in the United States (Champagne). Though Texas governors have various executive, legislative, and judicial powers they have little when comparing to other states in the U.S. This is due to the plural form of government the Texas Constitution of 1876 rules for the governors. This form of government poses many problems but also has its benefits. One of which is the allowance for more democracy. The governor of Texas has limited power due to the Plural form of government. When comparing the plural executive versus the single executive forms of government the plural is definitely more power restricting. The plural form of government disperses the power between multiple officials. In Texas, there are seven officials; “…the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller of public accounts, commissioner of the General Land Office, commissioner of agriculture…[and] secretary of state” (Champagne). Of the seven, all but the secretary of state is elected. The secretary is appointed by the governor. This could cause unity problems due to the governor only being able to make sure one person, the secretary of state, is on his side. This form of government puts all the power into one person’s hands. A great example of this is the president of the united states. The governors and the lieutenant governors are elected together and then the governor appoints officeholders. Each position that is mentioned above is picked and filled by the governor and they serve to help him with his agenda. This adds a lot of power in the governor’s hands.
