As we learned previously in this course, there are numerous interest groups active in Texas politics. In Texas, just like elsewhere in the country, interest groups serve to rally and bring attention to their cause and in the process, influence what government institutions do. Good or bad, the reality is interest groups exist. I will focus on one Texas interest group: Texas Right to Life Committee.
Texas Right to Life is the oldest, largest, and only statewide Pro-Life organization in Texas. This interest group is whole heartedly against abortion of any kind and against censorship of prolife activities and literature, citing First Amendment Right of Freedom of Speech. In today’s modern times of freedom to do as we please, wear what we please, even be of whatever gender we please, it is difficult for women to accept limitations of what they can and cannot do to their body. The Right to Life Committee believes in God thus most of its activities are based on their faith. The prime example being ‘Thou Shalt not Kill’ which is one of the 10 Commandments. Controversy arises when not everyone believes in a God. And even some that do, they do not agree that religious beliefs have any place in politics or in establishing legislation. The non-seculars could easily see abortion from the perspective of a mere medical procedure and nothing more, as opposed to the Right to Lifers whose perspective in everything they do is centered off their religious faith. Even their website states they still have much work to do to build the Kingdom of God. Where many saw Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton as a step towards furthering women’s rights and women’s equality, many others saw it as a first step in our nation going to hell. For those who do not believe religion has a place in politics, they see this interest group as a threat. Another controversial issue is the funding of these abortions. Texas Right To Life committee are fighting to stop health insurance from covering cost of abortions. The rationale being that all Texas tax payers help fund health insurance companies but not all Texans believe in abortions. Still another controversial issue is the role of Planned Parenthood. This interest group is squarely against funding Planned Parenthood where as many others see Planned Parenthood as possibly the only means some women would have to OB-GYN
