Texas Ice Storm Analysis

Decent Essays
A few years ago our area was hit with a severe ice storm knocking out electricity for a period of 4-5 days for most, and up to 10 days for some residents. Outdoor temperatures during the event fluctuated between high 30’s and low 20’s. Cold enough to get your attention, while not being life-threatening.
A few years prior to the ice storm, a severe thunderstorm and squall line blew through the area knocking out power for about the same number of days as the first scenario. The difference was that this event occurred in the middle of summer and outdoor

The application of color and paint in a piece creates a noticeable surface texture within the work. This surface texture can be used to enhance the general chaos or conversely the straightforwardness of a work. The use of color within the image also has an effect on the overall mood of the painting and the viewer’s perception of the subjects. In Claude Monet’s Grainstacks (Snow Effect) the heavily textured surface of the painting and visibility of the separate brush strokes creates a sense of complexity, which along with the practice of keeping colors separate, adds to the visual depth of an otherwise very plain subject but still enforces the general mood of the painting. On the other hand in Kingstein’s Christ in a Pawn Shop the surface texture…

Review of “The Storm That Swept Mexico” The review of the documentary “The Storm That Swept Mexico” will cover two points in this review. The first point of my review will be how this documentary demonstrated how individualistic and collectivistic culture's interaction can lead to events such as a revolution. Secondly, I will attempt to answer the question of what was the effect of revolution on Mexico and its peoples. Individualistic and collectivist cultures in “The Storm That Swept Mexico” demonstrate how views can be used to gain an advantage if one does not have the scruples to morally guide them.…

The Armistice Day blizzard was so strong and forceful, cars were moved and many people were injured thinking they would be safe in a sturdy vehicle. “Passenger train No. 106 coming into Minneapolis from Enderlin, N.D., overran a switch signal and collided head on with a freight train,” explained Ben Walter, a writer for the Star Tribune. While people thought they were safe in their cars or homes, they were not. And not only did it hurt people’s actual lives and their homes, but businesses and agricultural industries took a big hit. “Icy winds killed hundreds of apple trees, and planting a new orchard was expensive,” Simmons informed.…

Last week Meteorologists predicted the category three Hurricane, Joaquin, to make landfall hitting the Carolina’s. Gratefully it never made landfall, but unfortunately the Carolina’s received trillions of gallons of rain from the hurricane. Florence County flooded very badly; streets resembled Miniature Rivers, golf-courses looked like The Rapids, bridges were completely washed out, homes completely flooded, people were being evacuated, etc. Last Thursday night the rain started, it was unlike a regular thunder-storm that we usually experience in South Carolina. The rain was heavier than normal and it felt like the rain was all coming down at one time, the wind was abnormally stronger, and it stayed constant throughout the night.…

GEOG 306 Literature Review Introduction Severe weather prediction is an evolving concept that regions adopt through the need for improved documentation and increased understanding of destructive weather-related forces. Extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, storms or flash floods can considerably damage roads, railways and power lines. Regions focused on reducing impacts from extreme weather are appointing emergency management teams with the primary responsibility to proactively develop and implement initiatives to improve their preparedness for dangerous winds and thunderstorms (Baumgart, Bass, Philips & Kloesel 2008). A number of articles have shown that concerns are growing as a result of the increase of extreme weather events…
