The greater Appalachia filtered down from the famed Natchez Trace from Pennsylvanian, Ohio, Kentucky, and also Tennessee. The Scots-Irish of the greater Appalachia set the feisty character of the republic and of the state that followed, but they were not the only European group to have an impact on Texas. In the 1840’s Germans came in the town of Fredericksburg and made a German speaking belt that went across much of the state. Czechs and Poles followed alone as well, people managed to preserve their language and folkways for a few generations, but Texas soon change them. Carved from the bosom of Mexico, Texas gave rise to a hybrid culture that caught on like no other.
