Teun Van Dijk: A Socio-cognitive Model
Teun Van Dijk is a pioneer of the study and reseach in domain of CDA. His critical works are mostly in the field of prejudgeing and racism in discource. His early works included the talks of Netherlander and Californian Caucasians about the ethnic minorities and the role of these talks in the reproduction of the ideology.The analysis on the topics showed that whatever people talked about represented their mindset, as per Van Dijk's point of view those things are mental and personal tenets about ethnic events.He furthur believed that talkng about others include positive self-representation and negative other-representation. Although he emphasises alot upon cognition but believes that since the nature of discourse is lingual so CDA needs merely linguistic foundations as well as cognitive foundations. In a broad sense Van Dijk’s triangle, discourse is a communicative event that includes oral interactions, written text, body movements, pictures, and other semiotic signifiers.Over here cognition refers to personal and social cognition, beliefs, goals, values, emotions, and other mental structures. Society includes both local micro structures and political, social and universal macro structures which are defined in terms of groups and their relationships such as dominance and inequality. The discourse in this triangle social and cognitive dimensions are deemed, in fact the context is both micro and macro. Macro context refers to historical, cultural, political, and social structure in which a communicative event occurs, whereas micro context shows the features of the immediate situation and interaction in which a communicative event
