Animal Cruelty: The Influence Of Biomedical Research On Animals

Biomedical scientists study and perform experiments on animals such as rats, mice, reptiles, chimpanzees, and many others for ailments that ultimately cause death. An animal’s internal systems and organs closely resemble humans in complexity and vital functions such as breathing, reproduction, and digestion, so scientists understand how it will affect the human body and life cycle. While petri dish studies are available using human cells and could prevent what the Humane Society considers animal cruelty by solely using them in these experiments, it still is not ethical nor legal to use on human subjects. There have been many regulations put in place to ensure that testing on animals remains as humane as possible. For example, The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) puts stipulations on animal housing including routine inspections by veterinarians. Scientists put the kidney of one animal into another and to their surprise the kidney continues to make urine, albeit not very long. Several studies found that when foreign tissue is put into the body, its immune system’s natural defense is to destroy it, referring to rejection. With knowledge of the immune system, scientists experiment on suppressing the immune system to eliminate rejection. In conjunction with transplantation, subjects take drugs known as an immunosuppressant and the body no longer recognizes the new organ as foreign, hence reducing the rejection episode. Without this testing on animals my beloved son would not live pass the age of two and receive his organ transplant curing his disease. As a matter of fact, animals benefit from the testing and can receive transplants as well.
