The Importance Of STAAR Testing

For a couple of reasons, students shouldn’t be required to take state test such as STAAR Tests in order to move on and graduate from high school. Students should not be required to take STAAR Test because it can destroy their confidence, become stressful and some students have testing anxiety. Testing anxiety is not common but I have a family member that does and he has to suffer in his life after high school because of it. Also, the STAAR Test can become another source of stress on top of everything else teenagers stress over. Lastly, the STAAR can really destroy a student 's self-confidence and I know that from personal experience. These are three valid points that supports that student 's should not be required to take the STAAR Test in …show more content…
Testing anxiety is a fear of failing that you feel before or while taking an important test such as the STAAR. Testing anxiety can really have a negative effect on your performance on a test. No matter how good a student does in school, testing anxiety can affect their performance on the STAAR Test in a negative way. It just is not fair that these students fail a test as important as a STAAR Test because of something they do not have control over. You cannot exempt these select few of students from the test because then that would not be fair for the rest of the students. That is why all students should not be required to take important test such as the STAAR in order to move on and/or graduate. Like I said before, I have a family member that has a bad case of testing anxiety. When he was in high school a couple of years ago, he had to take his state test like the rest of us do. He was an average …show more content…
Either if they fail or get a low grade, the student 's confidence in themselves would drop to the point where they do not think they will be able to pass any major test like the STAAR Test. The reason that a test like the STAAR can destroy a student 's confidence, is because this test determines if you move on not only in school, but on to the next chapter of life after school. If a student fails a STAAR Test, they can be held back in a class and possibly not even graduate on time. Also, a lot of students that fail a major test like the STAAR drop out of school because they feel embarrassed that they failed the test. I also know this from personal experience. In middle school, I failed the english state test and i was really disappointed in myself. I was so embarrassed that I did not want to go to school because I knew my fellow classmates would ask me how I did on the test. I ended up not going to school for the last two weeks of school. I also didn’t go to the school dance or school trip. I was just too embarrassed to go to school after i failed the test. I am sure that I am not the only person that has ever felt like that. That 's why important test such as the STAAR Test should not be required to be taken by students because it can really destroy their self-confidence. There are many other reasons that support why students shouldn’t be required

The pressure that school, no matter the level, puts on students is unhealthy. Students are stressed to the max trying to achieve certain goals set by society. Every student strives for a 4.0 GPA and a high score on standardized test, even though they go through great amounts of stress to feel they have reached those goals. While if you don 't reach those certain goals you will feel like you have failed and not truly been prepared for your future. Evaluating students based on standardized testing is a very poor and inaccurate way to determine their intelligence.…

Throughout my educational career standardized testing has been a major part in determining whether or not you can proceed to the next grade or whether you have to take the class again. A Lot of kids that were my age when I had to take the STAAR test usually dreaded having to take a standardized test like the STAAR English II exam. I was no different, I was one of those kids who just wanted to get this test done with and move one. For a while this philosophy of mine worked, however that all would change when I ended up failing the English II STAAR test during my sophomore year of high school. Thus leading to a change in how I would view standardized testing and how my writing composition skills would eventually improve and affect my life.…

Could you imagine cramming for a huge test but not being able to use what you learned in your daily routine or sometime in life? Standardized tests are not furthering students education. For example, students who are either in the low income, minority, or disabilities bracket will tend to not pass and most likely not graduate. As for teachers, some will feel that they are teaching to the test not based on any literary depth and some schools offer teachers incentives to get the highest test scores. My sister who teaches in middle school has been told in recent years that her students are “just a number” and if she receives high enough scores, she could receive a raise. She believes that she is teaching solely strategies on how to take the test rather than actual literary content and that the test does not accurately measure her student’s skills. I truly believe we should do away with standardized testing in Texas.…

The STAAR is supposed to evaluate what students have learned during the school year. In doing so, teachers are also tested. Customarily, teachers use multiple testing formats to access the true understanding their students. The format of the STAAR does not give students the option of multiple formats. Per Walter Stroup, an associate professor at the UT Austin School of Public Education, the test format is to blame.…

While this might seem a more idle threat than that of mental health problems, it is still part of a larger problem, and a bigger picture. Students attend school, or are intended to attend school, for the betterment of themselves –and by extension, their community. With large tests starting with younger and younger grades, it’s no wonder many students have high test anxiety. As Bloom states about testing anxiety “While other forms of fear tended to decrease with age, text anxiety typically increased as pupils progressed through school”, in other words, while a child scared of snakes may love them by the time they’re adults, a child scared of tests –and failing tests—may, and likely will, continue to be terrified of them through adulthood. Not should this fear raise a cause for concern, but the fact that many students do not remember the significance of historical events, or know different ideologies, because they only remembered the answer for a test they have long since taken, should also be something addressed.…
