A friend has applied for a job and been called in for an interview. She has been told that the company requires applicants to complete a personality test. Your friend has enough knowledge of personality tests and the job description to know that her personality profile is not exactly what the company is looking for. However, she would really like the job and believes she would make a great employee. The best advice would be, to explain to her that it’s always in her best interest to be true to herself, as well as others by simply being herself; and this is no different than any other. Remember, honesty will land you more than dishonesty, because just knowing you achieved something on your own merits, is so much more rewarding, than that of cheating your way to the top. Besides it not only the merits, but it gives you peace of mind knowing that this job was offered through your knowledge, accountability, personality, and mostly your overall skills; not just because you had someone else fill your shoes. However, personality test are never what we expect it to be, it can be a bit “controversial leading some critics to believe they can lead to legal problems, whereas others disagree whether cognitive ability tests (especially intelligent test) or personality test provide the most useful information for selection decisions” (DeNisi & Griffin, 2014, p. 156).
