Fordyce Experiments

Improved Essays
Fordyce did an experiment to test different ways of increasing peoples happiness..

A few of those ways were keeping a positive attitude, spending less time worrying,

making more time for important relationships, do the things they enjoyed, and being

more outgoing. The subjects of the experiment mostly had an increase in happiness after

following the list. To increase my personal happiness I could also follow the list.

I could start out by having a more positive attitude. I have a tendency to have a

negative outlook on things. I always try to find the negative in a situation before the

positive because it is more likely to be the outcome. If I changed the way I view things to

positive I would have an increase in happiness. Something

For example, I really enjoy playing tennis so if I take a little time out of my

week to go to the courts and hit for a little while my happiness will be improved because

I get to do what I enjoy. If I could not make it to play tennis I could always watch my

favorite movie or favorite television show. As long as I make time to do the things I

enjoy and the things that make me happy I will be a happier person over all.

One more way I could increase my happiness is by being more outgoing and

social. I have always been a quiet shy person. It does not necessarily stand in the way of

my happiness, but it could decrease it or prevent me from being as happy as I could be.

So instead of being scared to say hello to the person that sits next to me in class I could

talk to them and potentially become friends with them. Instead of being to scared or

nervous to raise my hand and answer questions in class I could start participating and

even improve my entire outlook on class. By doing something as easy as speaking up and

being friendly I can improve my happiness and my college experience.

True happiness comes from being able to accept oneself and stand up for yourself, not letting other’s thoughts and opinions deter your from what you enjoy. My personal struggle with identity and the pressure to live up to expectations have created divisions in myself that have shaped who I am as a person. In Jonathan Haidt’s The Happiness Hypothesis, he discusses the causes for the way humans act and introduce methods to improve their satisfaction. Reflecting on my experiences through the lenses presented by Haidt in his novel, I have utilized some of his ideas as a springboard in developing my own happiness hypothesis.…

Everyone has their own individual definition of happiness. Richard Taylor describes happiness as “a state of being, not a mere feeling” (Taylor, 116), but how may one come to this total state of fulfillment? Vivien Sung who wrote Five-Fold Happiness and Richard Taylor who wrote a chapter on happiness in his book An Introduction to Virtue Ethics both agree that happiness is made up of many different parts. Because happiness is made up of different components, achieving prosperity, longevity, and wealth are three elements that can lead to being fully…

Over this past year I learned that my negative beliefs I had about myself regarding my potential were the cause of my lack of success in my school work. When I first did academic decathlon last summer I kept telling myself that I wasn’t capable of being as great as the top students in the class. This year I went in with a different attitude, therefore proving to myself that there was nothing wrong with my brain, and I can in fact be successful with hard work and dedication. Reducing my optimism bias would be beneficial to me in this scenario because it would keep me grounded and push me to study even when I excel on an exam. If I were to overlook the optimism bias, I could potentially harm myself because I would be overlooking the fact that…

As a NCSSM applicant it is important to have a high level of maturity, an attribute I believe I have. In all of my classes so far in both middle and high school I have made an A, however I don't see that as the main objective. Even though grades are an indicator of how hard a student works, it is not always a reflection of what that student is learning. Considering schools are meant for learning, that should be every students top priority, not necessarily grades. As for managing schedules and deadlines, in middle school I was part of the both marching band and the volleyball team in the same season.…
