Tess Hutchinson In The Lottery

In the short story, “The Lottery,” it starts out with children playing and being merry. The beginning of the story gives off the impression that everyone is at a town picnic enjoying life. We soon learn something else is happening instead. The town is about to murder one of its own as a sacrifice to the corn. They made a saying about the lottery in order to make it seem less appalling. The saying is, “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon,” which basically means someone has to die so there is one less mouth to feed. Everyone seems cool and collected; they all have blind faith in the system and believe that there is no way they are going to be selected. The person out of the crowd that seems the most composed about the situation is Tessie Hutchinson. She evens says, “Get up there Bill,” when her husband’s name is called. Tessie Hutchinson is confident in the beginning, vocal when scared, and terrified once picked. Tessie starts out pretty confident. She shows up to the lottery late and smiling ear to ear. Once her husband name is called to draw, she wills him up there, almost like it is a joke. She has so much faith in the system that she gives the impression that she thinks her family will never get chosen. Her husband on the other hand does not seem that confident in his pick. There is a hushed silence that goes over the crowed. Everyone holds up there papers to prove that they did not get the black dot. Then all of a sudden a whisper goes through the crowd, “Bill Hutchinson got it.” Poor Bill picked the one with the black dot. Tessie stares at it with disbelief. She turns incredibly vocal stating that it was not fair, that Bill did not get enough time to choose. No one in the crowd listens to her and even one of her neighbors yell out, “be a good sport Tessie.” Tessie is on the verge of tears and all she wants to do is redraw, but no one is going to risk the chance of getting
