In previous years, health and safety in the work environment was particularly the business' obligation. Nowadays, the employees have managed to gain more and more rights, as well as responsibilities, and the target is that the existing health and safety emphasis on everyone’s wellbeing, employees and employers alike, in the workplace. Employers, and businesses in general, have many different responsibilities towards their workers.

Tesco’s Health and Safety Act is focused on the safety of their employees and customers. This enables the employees at Tesco to feel safe and comfortable at their workplace, not only with that but with the equipment that they use by providing them with uniforms, etc. Tesco in order to be in check with the Health and Safety Act, sets different procedures, like training their employees in health and safety related training, and they have to keep doing this with the new employees as well. By having poor health and safety performance, Tesco is losing money from lawsuits and fines, time, personnel that go on strike, personnel that quit working there. On the other hand, if Tesco is doing well at the risk assessments and follows the health and safety regulations, then the employees will be more motivated knowing that they are safe, they will be less absent because of sicknesses, etc., less to no accidents and it saves money. However, Tesco have one of the worst hygiene’s after having failed 29 inspections by the FSA. Moreover, the lighting should be fully working, especially in the storage room, so that the employees can see where they are going and to be able to work, without enough lighting, there could be many incidents of accidents and it would be deemed as unsuitable. Tesco also has toilets for both staff members and customers to use, so therefore, they should be kept as clean and tidy as hygiene standards are supposed to be.
