As a Canadian you are almost guaranteed to know who Terry Fox is. Terry Fox was a normal Canadian man who was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, at the age of 18. Terry’s leg was amputated, and he underwent chemotherapy afterward, gave him a 50% chance of survival. Two years before, before the discovery of chemotherapy, Terry would only have had a 15% chance at survival; this inspired him to want to raise money for cancer research. On April 12, 1980, after undergoing chemotherapy, recovery, and training, Terry set out on a journey to run across Canada in hopes to raise one million dollars for cancer research, called the Marathon of Hope. After reaching his original goal, he aspired to raise one dollar for every person in Canada. Terry Fox was brought to a halt in Thunder Bay, Ontario, due to chest pain and intense coughing, where he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981, after reaching his goal.
