Terrorist attacks are used to create fear, panic, death and chaos in a community, city, state or country. Terrorists may do this for any number of reasons such as political, religious or environmental causes. First responders must be prepared to counter and respond to any number of different attacks including; bombings, shootings, explosive devices and cyber-attacks. First responders need to have situational awareness, gather intelligence, plan, train, and have the necessary equipment to be able to counter, and respond to these attacks. Local agencies must understand general planning concepts and have them in place to counter and prevent terrorist attacks, to handle these dynamic constantly changing situations, in order to protect US National …show more content…
First responders need to cultivate relationships with the different minority groups, businesses, churches, media outlets and medical facilities. Utilizing community policing enables local law enforcement to have open lines of communication with residents of minority communities, and gives law enforcement the opportunity to walk among the citizens and build rapport with them (Policing Terrorism Brief 2). The goal in countering and responding to a terrorist attack is to save lives and minimize the damage inflicted. Understandably there really isn’t a successful response to a terrorist attack. If first responders use the described steps of having situational awareness, gathering intelligence and planning and training they will be better prepared. Knowing what types of responses to expect from different agencies increase the chances for mitigating the damage done. First responders must know beforehand the steps to counter and respond to terrorist attacks to protect lives, property and US National
