In Module One I will discuss the term terrorism. The definition for terrorism is varied depending on the source; The DOD approved definition is “The calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or intimidate government or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.” (TRADOC, 2007, p. 1-2) The word terrorism is used almost in everyday life if you listen to the news or work for a government agency. Terrorism is used to describe criminal acts in almost every country that causes people to think about their safety. Terrorism is psychological warfare that is used for different reasons over the world but the intent is the same across the board. The intent of any terrorist organization is strike fear in the town, cities, or country that they are attacking. Terrorism can be used in a lone wolf attack on a specific target or a broad attack that is meant to cause as much devastation as possible. The operational intent of a terrorist organization is to use fear and the threat of violence to keep the public scared. The timing, location, and method of attacks are coordinate from the start to garner the most media attention. The terrorist understand what will cause the media to report on the next attack and how to manipulate popular perceptions of the targeted audience. The media is used for propaganda and is part of the planning process to ensure the attack will reach the largest audience. Terrorism is used to instill fear and a sense of threat that also is used to communicate their message to a wider audience that in turn recruits new members. The propaganda that is used from media coverage puts the terrorist organizations cause out to the public and allows normal people to be persuaded to join their cause.
