Lovecraft describes Lavinia, Wilbur’s mother as an “deformed, unattractive albino(Muhleman).” This shows that her appearance is different which leads the citizens to avoid her. “The mother was one of the decadent Whateleys, a somewhat deformed, unattractive albino women of thirty-five(Lovecraft).” This also shows that because she is part of the Whatley’s she is shunned. Lavinia’s father, Old man Whatley “is feared by the local populace for his practices of black magic(Muhleman).”this adds on to the fact that the Whatley’s are sunned and avoid at all cost because of the ties with santinsim and black magic. Lovecraft shows The Dunwich horror as “an even larger version of Wilbur-yards and yards wide and more hideous, made of rope-like appendages like that of a spider or centipede, with gaping mouths lining its stalks it has red eyes and albino hair (“The Dunwich Horror”).” This shows that the monster was a terrifying and immense creature. When the creature was revealed a Whatley screamed ““Bigger’n a barn . . . all made o’ squirmin’ ropes . . . (Lovecraft).” This shows that the creature was petrifying and no one had seen anything like it. Lovecraft created the Dunwich Horror to implement terror on the reader and the other characters in the
