Hour 5
Section #3 Hazardous Chamber Terrestrial Chamber To begin building our terrestrial chamber, was like a job for my group (which it wasn’t supposed to be) because my group were busy talking when I was busy building the terrestrial chamber (I was the terrestrial chamber captain). In order to build a terrestrial chamber you need fertilizer, grass seeds and most important of all is a consumer to main the gasses’ length. To begin with, on day 1 (8/26) we mixed stay green seed and to see which seed will survive the longest. Additionally, .5 of stay green dirt was used and 70 ml of water for the grass seeds to grow. Unlike Alex and Purmias group the type grass seed my group used was a genius idea (which I came up with). Since our grass seed was mixed, the grass grew a staggering 15 centimeters long in the first week of the lab!! (Day 2) We needed a way to control our grasses’ crazy length,

To begin, water is very murky because of the apple I added and I don’t know how an organism cold survive, because it is terrifying. The PH hand temperature stayed consistent because the room temperature did not change significally. Our organisms looked like they were fresh out of a movie, because there are tons of it. Microorganisms are starting to appear, which a good sign of life so far. Makena brought Jerarel a fish (9/3/14) and it seems to have made an enemy already. Jerarel ate the frog as dinner according to my theory, Zack’s and Makenna’s. The only person in our group who does not believe this theory is Rebecca because she is a science person and wants hardcore evidence, but the rest of us believe in fantasy. On disassembly day, some mysterious creatures were visible under the microscope. Our two mysterious creatures were later identified and it consisted of two scuds mating and a damsey

The possibilities that we can conclude on why it didn’t grow are endless. Some high factors that could prevent it from growing are that we planted the seed too to the fertilizer spike and it received too many nutrients from it. The most common factor that we can observe is that the environment of the seeds planted was overpopulated. Each seed was competing against other plants for growth by taking the nutrients from the soil and water supply. Other observations that we recorded were that our plants were self-pollinating under our control.…

This experiment was devised to discover the effect of Soil Salinity on the health of a Bald Cypress sapling. This is highly relevant to the people of Southeastern Louisiana. Ever since more land has begun to be lost, salt intrusion has affected the freshwater swamps causing Cypress Trees to die and continue the cycle of land loss ("Salt Tolerance of Southern Baldcypress"). This experiment’s results were to help the understanding of Cypress Tree salt tolerance and discover why the Cypress Swamps are struggling to recover.…

Five morphological observations were made from looking at the unknown fossil specimen. See the list of the observations that were made. Figure 4 Fossil Cladogram was then redrawn into the lab journal and a prediction was made on the fossil placement on the cladogram based on the observations. Next, an explanation of the reasons for the prediction was then recorded in the lab notebook. The four gene file were then downloaded onto the computer by going to the website listed below.…

This experiment was designed to test what the limiting nutrient was in Loughberry Lake, as well as examine the trophic state of the lake. In order to find out what the limiting nutrient was, we performed a few different tests. We began with a secchi disk test to see the transparency of the water. Then, we took water samples that we later used to test the turbidity levels of the water after adding varying amounts of phosphorous and nitrogen.…

Introduction: To fully understand the investigation, there are three main definitions to keep in mind. Thermal Niche is a development in which natural selection forms adaptation for an organism through temperature. Acclimation is the process for the organism to become accustomed to the climate change. Fitness is simply the survival of an organism, however, in the investigation, locomotion is more suited due to the focus on the affect temperature has on the organism’s performance. For this lab, the organism experimented on is a water flea, called Daphnia Magna.…

The ocean covers around 70% of the world, contains hundreds of thousands of life forms, and many that have yet to be discovered. Although, we can learn a lot in the classroom environment, there is no better way to understand the marine environment than to physically explore it. The field trip to Virginia Key Beach Park was a great experience. The park is located minutes from downtown Miami and just off the Rickenbacker Causeway. Me being from Texas I had to do some research for the history of the park.…

This means that the radishes have become what they are now, due to selective breeding over the course of thousands of years. “Grown worldwide for its fleshy, edible taproot, radish is thought to have originated in the eastern Mediterranean region.”…

Seashell Lab What does the different concentration of acid do to shells? Due to earth’s increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) rates scientists have shown that it can make shells , skeletons and corals up to one-third lighter in weight. As the ocean water becomes more acidic it lowers the calcium carbonate available to aquatic animals. ‘Scientists have predicted that the increase in ocean acidification could significantly reduce the ability of these creatures to build their casings, potentially devastating them and causing rippling effects through the ecosystem.’…

I had always known that the CDC was in Atlanta and tried to prevent disease on a global scale, but he truly opened my eyes to the wonders of Public Health and the CDC. My dad is a pediatrician, and I have always been interested in medicine, but he always seems to be playing a game of catch up. The disease comes first, then he has the task of fighting it off. Dr. Jernigan showed me a completely different and fascinating approach.…

Areas that have been abandoned are often sealed to avert the cost of ventilation (McMahon et al., 2007). The MSHA investigation determined that methane gas accumulated in an abandoned a portion of the mine sealed by 40 inch thick Omega blocks (U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration, 2006). A lightning strike, then served as an ignition source igniting 400,000 cubic feet of methane gas (WVOMHST, 2006). This caused a sudden explosion resulting in damage to the omega seals. Deadly gases and debris were then projected into the area surrounding the working miners (WVOMHST,…

It was a crisp sunny morning, peering out the kitchen window I could see Blackbirds perched on frosty roof tiles, these were accompanied by steam being vented with regularity from the neighbours central heating, it was the first proper winters day we have had. The multitude of different mugs rattled away as I hastily liquidised a loaf of bread before setting about to tinker with my cheese paste mixture. The rivers were likely to still be coloured and I wanted to try and create a slight clouding effect, so whilst mixing a new batch of the blue krill paste I included a liberal helping of powdered milk, the idea being that this would leak off a creamy textured cloud and prove alluring to any inquisitive chub. A healthy flask of coffee was soon stashed away and I was eventually ready to make my way to the riverbank for a mornings chub searching. It was brilliantly sunny and it did not take long for the rod blank and eyes to start freezing up at regular intervals.…
