Terre Mortes: A Short Story

It was pretty normal to see a missing persons' report in the local newspaper. People seemed to go missing every once a month in the town of Terre Mortes. Nobody seemed to know what the hell happened to them after they went missing, because no one ever came back. Almost every day the police ran up and down the roads attempting to find just a hint of evidence. They never found any of course. Honestly, whoever took the people must have been amazing at hiding anything and everything.

The whole town had been keeping indoors because of all the missing people. All they could think about was "What if I was next?". And with that most shops went out of business except the local market and bank. Everything was either bought online or forgotten about.

They talked about anything that came to mind. School, art, love, anything and everything. It was something they did with their mother before she died an untimely death. Sometimes it ended up with both of them storming off to their rooms and slamming the doors. Other times it ended in hugs and chocolate cake.

But this night specifically was an important talk. Kolton had been found carrying a knife by the local police but had been let go at the Request of Emma. They knew her and trusted her new parental authority. The class had run late this day so right after the bell rang she zoomed down the hallway. Not even getting a moment to speak with her best friend about their project. The students made their nightly commute and waved as she passed them.

Her backpack bounced up and down with each step. As Emma opened the glass door, freezing wind entered the building. It made the papers flutter on the walls and it made some of the students put their jackets on. She held onto the cold rail as she made her way down the steps.
