Results and Discussion: Part A: All the lemon peel date was obtained from my lab partner Irini Petros as cited in the references (2). From 2.486 grams of lemon peels, 0.11 grams of essential oil was collected for a percent yield of 4.43%. From 2.501 grams of orange peels, 0.12 grams of essential oil was collected for a percent yield of 4.80%. The difference in percent yield of the essential oils may …show more content…
The last control, -pinene had a peak at 3.070 minutes. The lemon essential oil GC showed a few different peaks, the main ones were present at 3.540 minutes (29.28% area ), 3.415 (16.78% area), 3.070 (1.45%) , and 4.290 minutes (52.49%).There were other small peaks, but these were not considered due to not matching the controls given. The peak at 3.540 minutes suggest limonene. The peak at 3.415 suggest -myrcene and 3.070 minutes suggest -pinene. The last peak at 4.290 suggest -terpinene. The lemon essential oil has a greater percent of -terpinene than any other terpene. The orange essential oil was run on GC 1 and the controls were as followed; -terpinene at 4.388 minutes, -pinene at 3.237 minutes, limonene at 4.032, and -myrcene at 3.488 minutes. The orange essential oil showed peaks at 4.230 minutes (96.83% area), 3.408 minutes (2.56% area), 3.180 minutes (0.35%), and 4.307 minutes (0.26%) Again, there were other small peaks, but these were not considered due to the controls. The peak at 4.230 minutes suggest limonene while the peak at 3.408 minutes suggest -myrcene. The peak at 3.180 suggest -pinene and the last peak at 4.307
