In November 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Finland. At this battle the Finnish soldiers were on skis, and they beat the Russian's. A man named Minot Dole, head of ski patrol, saw that a winter fighting unit would be a great addition to the United States Army. Dole brought to attention, that the army needed a 10th mountain division (a troop on ski's). After this he spent time training men. By December 1940, presented his findings to General George C. Marshall Army Chief of Staff. He was the who brought Dole's findings to life. 1941 his wish was granted. Eventhough he got a division to train, it wasn't treated seriously, yet. After the war things died down, many left to start new careers. Many of them that who left, went to places like; Vail, Aspen, Sugarbush, Crystal Mountain, and Whiteface Mountain. Few of the ski resorts built we know were built, by 10th Mountain Division Veterans. Back then, skiing was a rich man's sport, and some went onto, make it more affordable.
