The Aztecs: A Very Short Introduction by David Carrasco is a succinct but comprehensive history of the, in many ways infamous, ancient Latin American civilization known as the Aztecs. His book goes through an overview of the foundation and creation of the Aztec culture and way of life, their expansion, their taboo rituals of sacrifice and reputation as a violent and warlike group, and eventually the fall of the civilization as a whole. The book as a whole speaks volumes in its simplicity; it gives readers an excellent sense of what this strange and once very powerful culture once was in, as the title suggests, a very short amount of pages. The book begins with the description of the massive and intimidating wonder that was the city of Tenochtitlan.…

While digging near the main plaza, they found a finely carved stone monolith that displayed a dismembered and decapitated woman. Immediately, they knew they found something special. Afterward, archaeologists concluded that the monolith displayed the Aztec goddess Coyolxauhqui, the sister of the Mexica’s patron god, Huitzilopochtli. This monolith led to the detection of the Templo Mayor, the main Mexica temple located in the sacred district of the former Mexica capital, known as Tenochtitlan, which is now present-day Mexico City. The city of Tenochtitlan was established in 1325 on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco and with the city’s foundation the original structure of the Templo Mayor was built.…

Located ten kilometers off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the diminutive Cozumel, also known as the Island of Swallows, is an underwater marine park that protects the delicate balance of its spectacular coral reefs and its diverse marine life. Whether urban legend, historical fact, or still contested “truth”, many believe that a Frenchman and undersea explorer by the name of Jacques Cousteau put Cozumel on the map when he declared the region the most beautiful scuba diving area in the world. Twenty-eight miles long and 10 miles wide, Cozumel is Mexico’s largest island and was first settled by the Mayans in the early part of the 1st millennium AD. The Mayan civilization was advanced and featured a great culture, whose remnants survives today in the ruins on the island, with the largest remaining ruins at San Gervacio situated roughly in the middle of Cozumel. The Spanish first ventured into the region around 1518 when Juan de Grijalva made an expedition to Cozumel.…
