Tenneco-Personal Narrative

When arriving at Tenneco Automotive, I was welcomed by upper management, department leads and all other personnel. Weeks after I started, I was amazed each employee, plant manager to cleaning crew, demonstrated three particular values; integrity, perseverance and teamwork on a daily basis. These standards were their culture. Employees came to know and love the Tenneco way by spending 40-70 hours a week demonstrating what it really means to be a successful Tenneco employee.
Embracing these standards, I began my first project as the new product launch leader. In this role, I was responsible for the material flow, daily work, repackaging, logistics, quality, purchasing and management of five cells with a minimum of three employees per cell. Needless to say, I had my hands full. While juggling each role, I continued to maintain social relationships with peers on the floor and in the office. These relationships made me aware of new opportunities I could assist with to make Tenneco an enjoyable workplace.

Marissa Mayer, the ill-fated CEO of Yahoo!, clearly made some major blunders during her early tenure at the company. Specifically, she lacked a long-term strategy, refused to listen to other members of her team, and invested in a series of failed marketing ventures instead of focusing on improving fundamentals. Miguel Helft from Forbes magazine documents these points quite thoroughly in his article “The Last Days of Marissa Mayer?” Time and time again, Mayer refused to adhere to a single, coherent vision which employees and managers could follow. This played out most notoriously when the newfound CEO tried to re-organize the company's business structure: “...she began sketching out different scenarios in one-on-one meetings with various executives,…
