For the past four years I have had the pleasure of working for a Non-Profit Organization named Seven Hills Foundation. It was created in 1951, by a small group of parents of disabled children, sharing the same vision. That vision was to advocate and improve the lives of their children while providing support to each other when needed. Since that time, Seven Hills foundation has flourished into one of the largest support networks for individuals with life challenges. Seven Hills Foundation has an organizational culture that appeals to many people.…

Although I am currently in pursuit of a career as an engineer, I hope to retire early into a less demanding profession, so I can return to a small community such as my hometown and volunteer as a high school track and cross country coach. If I can share the same passion for the sport, which Coach Scannella shared with me, and alter at least one young person’s life in a positive manner, then I will be satisfied with my efforts. While my aspirations lie in the somewhat distant future, I have already taken steps to bring me closer to that point. One technical aspect of reaching this dream is to be able to advance my engineering career in a timely fashion, so I can achieve my personal goals and move on to this new pursuit. Thus, I have remained focused on my schoolwork throughout high school in order to prepare myself for the challenges that await me in college.…

While most people believe that non-profit are doing great public work, these organizations are often contributing to the increase of elitism and capitalist forms through corporate influence. Non-profit industrial complex (NPIC) is as a “set of symbolic relationships that link political and financial technologies of state and owning class control with surveillance over public political ideology, including and especially emergent progressive and leftist social movement” (Smith 8). This simply means that NPIC offers a space where corporations can control and authorize social justice movements through their financial support. It permits public monies to fall in the control of private corporation through foundations. The nonprofit industrial complex…

One book, The Only Woman in the Room, focused on not only the author’s individual experiences within the realm of physics academia, but also on other individual’s experiences and how they were affected by their mentor’s encouragement, or lack thereof, as well as familial and peer encouragement (Pollack 2015). Eileen Pollack, author of The Only Woman in the Room, says that her abandonment of physics and her goal to graduate school was due primarily to a lack of encouragement on the part of her academic advisor. This lead to an introspective, as well as external, analysis of why women were so discouraged in science in the first place, and whether or not men have the same experiences. It is the analysis of these experiences that will help uncover the true reason for unequal representation of women in STEM, and will move beyond the flippant argument that attributes this to biological differences. Inherent Differences…

Almost every economic scenario produces fierce competition among high-quality jobs regardless of educational requisites and worsens during periods of slow market growth often accompanying scarcities of capital investment. For that reason, each job seeker needs to develop a cognizance of applicable market conditions and preferably leverage circumstances exhibiting imperfect information. A good strategy seeks out situations eluding the limelight whenever possible, yet those have become exceeding rare due to a prevalence of Internet and social media. Sometimes less glamorous positions fly under the radar or otherwise evade the general herd. To illustrate, The Pew Charitable Trusts as well as Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the…

Third, research on African American women engineers is centered on those currently working as engineers while neglecting African American women engineering students. Fourth, research that relies on statistical analysis tends to have smaller numbers of African American females, making some of the conclusions drawn questionable when compared to the significantly larger numbers of White men and women. Some quantitative research articles attempt to oversample in order to remedy this problem; however, the numbers of African American female engineering students still pale in comparison to those of their White and male…

Les Brown once said “Help others achieve their dreams and you will achieve yours.” This year I chose the “Make-A-Wish Foundation” which grants wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions. This is a wonderful foundation and there are several reasons I selected this specific charity. One reason is they give opportunities to children whom, in some cases, have lost hope due to their condition and gives inspiration to keep looking towards the future. This is something I wish to accomplish this year.…
