In reading "Ten ways to think about writing" I learned of many new tactics and ideas to use when I approach writing a paper and or article. In the quote from Writing Without Teachers, Peter Elbow talks about his ideas on the process of writing. He says, “think of writing as an organic, developmental process in which you start writing at the very beginning – before you know your meaning at all – and encourage your words gradually to change and evolve” (Elbow). Elbow believes that you can’t know what you are going to discuss or to comment on until you are done writing and all of your thoughts finally come together to make sense. He also goes against the idea that writing is only a two-step process, saying that this is the wrong method to go about writing and is a backwards way of thinking. I agree with Elbow’s ideas because this is how I think about the writing process, and is how I write most of the time.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

As I look back on my middle school to high school years and try to decide what kind of writer I am, how well I can interpret and analyze other writings and text, and how easy it is for me to research and compose a well developed paper I believe I am at the level of English 100. From recent years, especially high school, I have learned what kind of writer I am and what techniques work best for me. When it comes to writing papers I have written a fare share, from research expository writings to persuasive writing. This year in particular the senior class is working on our senior papers which is a big research paper, the main goal is to teach us how to find information in large quantities on a subject of choice and insert that information into…

You also need to know how to pick and limit your writing topic. Rather than having many different ideas about one topic jumbled together, pick one idea and make a good, clear essay about it. You must have a topic where you are able to limit the size and handle it well. To be successful with academic writing, you must understand what you are doing when you write and it also depends on how you go about your writing task.…

Walking into English 28 that first Wednesday of class I had no idea what to expect. I was a bit nervous, being that I had been out of school for over 10 years and English is my least favorite subject, but I just wanted to get it out of the way, so I wanted to take it first. Surprisingly, I actually found the class very hopeful and easy to understand. I learned many different things. Among those things, three things really stood out, the writing process, different types of paragraphs, and relationships.…
