Tattoos In Modern Culture Essay

Superior Essays
In present day there have been many modernizations to the culture that has been created throughout the years. For example, in the local valley there have been a few twists and changes to the name of a traditional “quesadilla.” Yet in the local small areas of Arizona, they are not called “quesadillas,” if not they are called “cheese crisps.” Nevertheless, on a serious note, our present-day Christ followers have copied the way contemporary culture does it’s things. Modern day Christian have illustrated this claim by bringing tattoos into play by getting biblical scripture tattooed onto their skin in order to represent their faith. Yet in Leviticus 19:28 it says that one should not get tattoos on their skin, but one can counter with saying that …show more content…
For in the Holy word of God is reads, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” (Matthew 16:26 ESV) It is the one thing that God cares about and craves to have because He can offer eternal life and the life of a prince because that is what we are. Temptation disrupts that, yet it cannot change our worth in front of our Lord’s eyes. But that does not mean that one should go out into the world and do whatever one feels like doing. Yes, we were all born into sin and curiosity starting way back to when Adam ate from the forbidden fruit. Nonetheless, it does not make it impossible for one to avoid temptation and keep walking on the path of God. Jesus Christ himself has dealt with temptation and overcame it in the desert when it was just Him and Satan. In spite of that, Jesus overcame temptation and came out of that desert even stronger and wiser because He quoted the scripture and chose to live by the laws that God had left for His people. Therefore, one should not lose faith when it comes to dealing with world and it’s overflowing mediums that display temptation to those who witness it those mediums

Prior to the mid 2000’s, tattoos were viewed as self-mutilation and simply unnecessary. During the 1940’s, tattoos began to be a much more common accessory, especially among military men. Their reasoning behind obtaining these tattoos was to show off their pride towards their country. Most of these 1940’s style tattoos revolve around eagles, the American flag, and other strong American symbols. Older generations viewed these people with tattoos as simply being bad people.…

Dr. Lauren Dundes and Antonia Francis in the journal article, “Inking and Thinking: Honors Students and Tattoos” (2016), suggest that, for Honor students, tattoos are an act of defiance in reference to the expectations placed on them. Dundes and Francis support their claims by presenting evidence from a study the authors conducted. The author’s purpose is to explain why there is a substantial difference in the number of honors versus non-honors students who get tattoos in order to prove that honor students’ decisions to get tattoos are less likely to be based on outside influences. Although some Honors students get tattoos an act of defiance, they still contemplate getting tattoos for up to one year (Dundes and Francis 219).…

Humans create a pattern of likes and preferences called "Culture". The way we think about a specific topic, the language, the way we feel and act, the beliefs, the type of food we like, as well as music, among many others. All this set of likes and preferences are transmitted from generation to generation. In the two stories which were treated in "The Tattooer" class and "The Women's Swimming Pool," it is not very difficult to realize that they are largely focused on the culture and traditions. As I’ve done the reading for this week on tattoos and piercings, I was eager to learn more about tattoos in my native country. After a quick Google search with the key words: tattoo, culture and Romania, the following Vice article populated as the first result option with the title, “Here's a Collection of 19th-Century Romanian Tattoos and the Skin They Were Etched On” by Mihai Popescu. The title caught my attention, not just because it claims to be a historical approach on tattoos in Romania, but also because it reminded me of last week’s class discussion on what kind of body parts people preserve, since the second part of the title suggests that the actual pieces of skin that the tattoos were etched is part of the collection; in other words it isn’t just a collection of images but also a collection of the actual skins that bear the tattoos. As if the title of the article wasn’t enough to catch my attention, as I started reading it, I realized that the collector of the taboo-like collection of tattoo skins of “illiterate male delinquents” of Romanians and foreigners, was no other but, my cousin’s husband’s great-uncle, Nicolae Minovici. Nicolae Minovici and his brother Mina Minovici were forensic scientists and founders of…

In my opinion in the tattoo industry with in the last four hundred plus year the technology has grown for the best. Yes, in some traditions I would still believe the past traditional methods are the best way to achieve the look that is trying to be gained. On another note, I do agree the sanitary issues come along with the technology difference from the past versus modern day. While deciding between getting a modern day tattoo and receiving a traditional tattoo, you have to think about the factors such as the pain rate, the health issues that have been proven, along with the healing period of time needed. The technology now versus then has upgraded for the better, yes tattooing is an art, with today’s technology there is a better chance of…

Lastly, they must decide if the tattoo is pleasing to God, not just those around them. Only after going through this process should someone, Christian or not, get a…
