Value Of Welfare To Work

The values of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Welfare to Work Policy are permeated by the ideological and political values of those who make the policy. There are two different views about welfare to work and TANF. For some, welfare is kind of hand out to people who are consider to be weak and poor. The value behind this point of view is to get people out of welfare’s dependency and it is not the way to address the issue for those who are in needs. For others, welfare should be to lift those who are left behind with compassion and in order to move up to better status. (Hombs, 1996, p. 14). According to California Community Colleges CalWORKs Program Handbook (2011), the most important value of welfare to work is to promote self sufficiency and to have strong personal responsibility. One of the relevant NASW is service which refers to aiding people in need to solve social problems. Also, social workers prioritized the service beyond their proper interest. Social workers practice social justice in favor of marginalized groups of people. They are defenders against poverty, unemployment, discrimination, oppression and any form of social injustice. They work alongside of minorities to ensure they get equality of opportunity. Dignity and worth of the person is one of the core values of social worker. This value is related to their sense of responsibility to clients and society as a whole; they are ready to intervene in conflict resolutions in a professional way. Integrity refers to social worker value to act with honorable approach. In addition, social worker emphasizes relationship among people because they recognize it is the best way to get people to be involved in the practice of helping.
