Temple Grandin: Autistic Animal Scientist “Autism is part of who I am.” Temple Grandin, an autistic scientist, has made multiple discoveries and is still affecting the animal rights community in positive ways because of her autistic mind. Autism is a severe disorder of brain function that interferes with the ability to understand what is seen, heard, and touched (Fredericks 14-15). The physical symptoms of autism include meaningless repetition of words or phrases, impaired speech, inability to hold conversations, temper tantrums, overreaction to sensory stimulus including noise, lights, and texture, and hyperactivity. Like the physical symptoms, there are also mental symptoms of autism such as literal understanding of words or phrases, using gestures rather than words to communicate, and lack of speaking skills (14, 24-25). There are a lot of symptoms and causes of autism. Many people are to believe that the environmental causes of autism consist of fish, power-plant emissions, cigarette smoke, and well or tap water (41-42). Temple has also had a film made about her life titled Temple Grandin. The film has had fifteen Emmy nominations and won five of the awards. She has also written a book and has had a generous amount of books written about her throughout the world. As well as having books and a film made about her, she has also been featured on a range of television networks. Temple has given a speech at the Emmy awards and has given a lecture about different autistic minds at a Think, Exchange, Debate Conference, TED, (A&E). In her TED lecture Grandin talks about her inspiration to be an animal scientist.
