Temari Observation

Last summer I partnered with another educator from my school to craft a multisession mini course for Math for America. The course met over a three month period and focussed on teaching educators from the Metro New York area about the symmetries of a sphere using an ancient japanese art form called Temari. I used our organization’s shared digital message board called the small world network to post and share an overview of our course in the spring course catalog and invited 15-20 teachers to sign up for the three day mini course. Each session was set for two hours The first session provided participants with basic information about the history and connections between the art we would be analyzing and science and mathematics. Participants were …show more content…
First I crafted a series of 5 model types to show 5 distinct spherical symmetries. Then I worked with a partner to make 5 sets of these models. Next I created a set of users guides with step by step instructions and provided participants with both physical and digital copies of the user guides. I also provided participants with a screencast with a set of pause points for them to follow along with while they tried to recreate one of the symmetries I provided. Finally, I prepped 20 spheres so that the poles and equators were measured, tacked and outlined with pearl cotton for the participants to create a simple set of eight symmetrical guidelines for their individual spheres. I circulated the room and demonstrated how to recreate portions of a spherical model when participants struggled with difficult patterns. I discussed new insights with participants when they noticed connections between the original symmetrical pattern and their corresponding duals. At the end of the course, participants were surveyed about the content, delivery and goals of the course. Over 90% of participants strongly agreed that they were able to create a unique symmetrical pattern on a sphere which was the goal of the

In Chapter Four of Holler If You Hear Me by Gregory Michie, the author describes how some of the other veteran teachers in his education classes expressed their views on the disconnect between education theory and classroom reality. One such example of this disconnect is the theory of differentiated instruction. I have learned a lot about differentiated instruction in my Foundations Block classes this semester, since I had not previously heard of the concept. In theory, this practice is a great way to tailor instruction to each student’s individual needs, as well as encourage learning and exploration.…

These rambunctious students had just came back from lunch and were still phasing to settling down for their lesson. The teacher did a wonderful job of catching their attention through the transition of calming them. She had the students complete a word puzzle on the wall out of their spelling words. She had made the boards setup on the wall so that each student can just run up and connect a puzzle piece, in which case is one letter to help spell the word out, the next student would follow behind, completing another word and eventually they would have the word spelled out.…

My observation of Ms. de la Fuente’s 5th grade class this week started after lunch during their math time. On Wednesday, their schedule had been different from normal and there was two other teachers in the classroom teaching them about different types of rocks. On Thursday, a sixth grade math teacher came to the classroom to further explain what they had been learning about conversions, and to tell them about what they would learn next year when they went to sixth grade.. During arrival in the morning and dismissal in the afternoon, the same routine is followed on almost all days. In the morning, the students go wait in the gym and are picked up by the teacher when the first bell rings.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

As a universal language, mathematics is not only within the education system but rather in almost every aspect of life. When looking outside at nature or even at oneself, various types of symmetrical examples are present. Symmetry, according to the Oxford dictionary, means the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or around an axis. Hence, this similarity within symmetrical patterns, designed within various objects or persons appeals to the eye at first glance due to the formality and elegance created by its symmetrical balance. Symmetry is the most powerful and pervasive concept in mathematics, but yet many take it for granted and forget about its unique beauty.…
